JTEKT Machinery Introduces the WELE VTC 1612CW Vertical Turning Center

News VTC1612

A New Benchmark in Heavy-Duty Vertical Turning, Multi-Process Precision, and Structural Rigidity. JTEKT Machinery Americas is proud to announce the debut of the VTC 1612CW Vertical Turning Center, a next-generation solution developed by WELE and engineered for manufacturers who demand uncompromising rigidity, precision, and multi-process versatility. Making its first U.S. appearance through JTEKT Machinery, the VTC 1612CW expands the capabilities of the VTC Series with a robust design purpose-built for heavy-duty turning, high-precision milling, and complex machining in a single setup.

Engineered for Maximum Structural Stability and Long-Term Accuracy

The VTC 1612CW is built on a high-grade, one-piece cast-iron structure that undergoes full finite element analysis to ensure superior rigidity, vibration damping, and long-term thermal stability. Hardened guideways across the X, Z, and W axes deliver exceptionally smooth motion, while a square-section Z-axis carriage and step-design cross rail provide elevated stiffness during demanding cuts.

A twin servo-driven W-axis crossrail-delivering 18 tons of hydraulic clamping force-ensures precise, stable positioning for heavy machining operations. Every major casting and welded component is thermally stress-relieved and FEM-optimized, with more than 66 hand-scraped contact points providing the flatness and geometric integrity required for micron-level accuracy.

High-Performance Spindle System for Heavy Cuts and High-Precision Finishing

The VTC 1612CW incorporates a high-torque spindle system engineered to excel in both roughing and fine finishing:

  • Maximum Spindle Speed: Up to 2,000 RPM
  • Motor Power: Up to 55 kW (74 HP)
  • Maximum Torque: 3,850 Nm (2,840 ft-lb)
  • C-Axis Indexing: 0.001° positioning accuracy

Users can tailor the machine to their cutting demands with WELE's spindle configuration options:

  • Gear-Driven Spindle for extreme torque during heavy roughing
  • Direct-Drive Spindle for smooth, high-speed finishing
  • Two-Step Gear Spindle for balanced torque and speed flexibility

The spindle's hydrostatic bearing system automatically manages oil temperature and pressure to reduce thermal distortion, ensuring consistent performance during extended machining cycles.

Precision Rotary Table with WELE's Patented Backlash Elimination

At the heart of the machine is WELE's hydrostatic rotary table, featuring a patented backlash elimination system for exceptional C-axis accuracy. A curvic gear-tooth spindle coupling enhances rigidity during high-load cuts, while the live spindle design enables both turning and milling operations in a single, highly efficient setup.

High-Rigidity Axis System for Demanding Applications

All linear axes are equipped with robust box-type cast iron guideways and high-thrust drive systems designed to maintain smooth, controlled motion under extreme cutting forces. The result is reliable stability and repeatability-even when machining oversized or asymmetrical components.

Automatic Head & Tool Changer System

The VTC 1612CW is equipped with an advanced automatic head and tool changer system that allows seamless transitions between processes:

  • Tool Magazine – Highly flexible arrangement for various tool diameters
  • Capacity: Up to 90 tools, depending on configuration
  • Automatic Head Exchange - Fast, precise changes for multi-process machining
  • Reduced Setup Time - Higher spindle utilization and continuous machining capability

These features empower manufacturers to run complex parts with minimal manual intervention, significantly reducing cycle times and improving overall productivity.

A Complete Solution for Heavy-Duty Turning and Complex Multi-Process Machining

With its combination of structural rigidity, advanced spindle technology, hydrostatic rotary table precision, and highly adaptable features, the VTC 1612CW sets a new performance standard for vertical turning centers in large-component vertical turning.

From aerospace and energy to construction equipment, heavy transportation, and general industrial applications, JTEKT Machinery's newest introduction-developed by WELE-delivers the accuracy, reliability, and productivity required for today's machining environments.
